Frequently Asked Questions

  • Functional medicine is root-cause, systems biology medicine. With functional medicine we ask “why” an illness or symptom is occurring and “how” can we restore health and wellness. In conventional medicine, there is often a focus on a single symptom or system and oftentimes medications are used for each complaint because there isn’t the time to get to the root cause.

There is a time and place for conventional medicine as well as for prescription medications, and I intend to work in conjunction with your Primary Care Provider and be a apart of your healthcare team. My goal is to bridge what is missing in conventional medicine with extended education, lifestyle & nutritional modifications.

I firmly believe that getting to the root cause is the most important step to health. I am trained in both conventional and functional medicine and use a blend of both approaches to provide truly holistic, integrative care.

  • The simple answer is No. Even though I am licensed as a Family & Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, I am not your primary care provider.

As part of our patient agreement, you must maintain an active relationship with your traditional primary care provider for yearly physicals, screenings, and urgent needs and care that we cannot provide in this model. We do not provide after-hours care for emergencies or urgent matters.

We are happy to collaborate with your PCP or other healthcare team members regarding your care if you would like us to. Please note, care coordination fees may apply.

  • At this time, I do not accept insurance.

When practitioners accept insurance, they are restricted by contracts with insurance companies that dictate what services can be provided. Insurance often influences the type of care practitioners can provide, which does not lead to great results for patients with complex needs. This is why our current conventional healthcare system is falling short. There is simply not enough time to provide patients with quality, root cause and preventative care.

On that note, the extended 1:1 time and services we provide, we feel it is in our patient’s best interest to not accept insurance.

We are, however, able to accept FSA/HSA cards as payment. We will be happy to provide you superbills with applicable diagnosis codes to provide to your servicer for potential reimbursement, once visits are completed.

In some cases, you may be able to utilize your insurance carrier’s out-of-network benefits. Please note, you are responsible for checking your insurance and/or FSA/HSA servicer’s requirements.

Payment is due at the time of booking, with the exception of programs and bundles, in which we are happy to arrange payment plans. Please contact us if you are interested in a payment plan.

  • YES! I see established patients in-clinic at my office in SW Portland. All visits are by appointment only.

  • At this time, I am only able to accept patients physically in Oregon, Washington & Nevada state at the time of the visit. Yes, you can travel here to see me!

California patients may contact Stacy directly at www.stacymarienp.com.

Additional state licensing are in process (AZ, NV, ID, UT) as demand grows. Sign up for my newsletter to be the first to know when new states are added!

If you reside outside of these states, please contact me to see how I can help you. I do provide educational consultations to clients in other states. This means I can provide you with education regarding a particular health condition or medicine in general. In these visits, I do not diagnose, treat or prescribe medications. In other words, these visits are for general medical knowledge and direction only.

I’m also happy to refer you to colleagues that are accepting patients near you.

  • We work with a variety of lab companies including: LabCorp, Quest, Vibrant America, Precision Analytical (DUTCH), Diagnostic Solutions Lab (GI MAP), Genova, ZRT labs, 3x4 genetics, KBMO, Access medical and more.

We use a conservative approach to labs, supplements and pharmaceuticals. This means, we will only recommend what you actually need based on your history, clinical picture and goals.

Although functional medicine specialty testing can provide key clues into your health, there is a lot we can do to help you with just an expanded conventional lab set.

We believe in the right labs, at the right time for the right reason and we do not up-charge for any labs ordered.

Yes, basic labs can be billed to insurance, but we advise caution. It is not uncommon for insurance companies to deem certain labs as “not medically necessary,” even if the results could identify and help prevent acute or chronic health issues. Unfortunately, many patients find themselves unexpectedly billed at higher rates than the cash prices we can offer. Opting for an upfront cash price ensures transparency and avoids surprise bills arriving months after your visit. Keep in mind that we cannot control what your insurance will cover or the charges you may incur if coverage is denied. Choosing the cash-pay option allows for predictable, stress-free billing and often provides significant savings.

  • We value teamwork, collaboration, and clear communication in healthcare, but we do not provide recommendations that would interfere with another provider’s treatment plan. Providing a list of suggested labs for another provider to order and/or interpret is not appropriate for us or for the other provider. Doing so, is a disservice to you, your time and health, as this approach often leads to fragmented care and lack of follow-through. Our focus is on working directly with you through a functional medicine approach to address your health concerns comprehensively. While we are happy to provide guidance on testing as part of our care, this must remain within the scope of our collaborative work with you, ensuring your time and efforts are used effectively.

  • Yes, if needed. Medications are prescribed based on patient history, necessity and as part of a patient-provider agreement.

Prescription medications can be processed through insurance. In some cases, medications will not be covered, and in those cases we will work with you to offer alternatives. We work closely with several highly accredited compounding pharmacies and their pharmacists. In doing so, we will strive to get you the highest quality medications for the lowest prices.

We rarely believe it’s in the best interest of my patients to rely on chronic narcotics, sedatives or controlled substances, and thus infrequently prescribe them.

We do not store or dispense medications at our office.

  • Our programs address all aspects of metabolic health, including but not limited to hormone optimization, hormone replacement therapy and GLP-1 assisted medical weight loss. Each program is designed to uncover root causes, create personalized treatment plans, and provide the expert support you need to achieve lasting results.

  • Beginning in 2025, we will only be working with patients who commit to an initial program. Most of the time, effort, and work in functional medicine happens during the first 4-6 months as we dive into uncovering root causes, developing a personalized treatment plan, managing dosages, and creating lasting changes to support your health. This structured approach ensures we’re able to provide consistent, intentional care and prevent you from falling through the gaps of inconsistent or piecemeal healthcare. By committing to a program, you’ll receive the comprehensive care, guidance, and support you need to achieve meaningful and sustainable results.

  • After completing your initial program, you’ll have a solid foundation for your health journey and a personalized plan tailored to your unique needs. From there, you’ll have the option to continue working with us through one of our membership tiers, designed to provide ongoing support and guidance as you maintain and build on your progress. Memberships include continued access to me for questions, follow-up visits to refine your plan, and additional resources to help you stay on track. My goal is to ensure you feel supported every step of the way and never feel like you’re navigating your health journey alone.

  • While we strongly encourage committing to an initial program to achieve the best outcomes, we understand that it may not be the right fit for everyone.

A la carte options are available for those who prefer a more flexible approach. However, these visits do not include the extensive in-between support provided in our programs, such as direct messaging access, ongoing guidance, or regular progress check-ins. Additionally, a la carte visits are priced at a premium compared to the rates offered to patients who commit to programs or memberships.

These visits are ideal for those seeking standalone consultations or specific guidance without the commitment of a program. If you’re unsure which approach is best for you, we are happy to help you decide what aligns with your needs.

  • Appointments can be made through my electronic medical record (EMR) scheduling system here.

  • Your appointment will vary from 30-90 minutes depending on visit. Although we may not use the entire time slot for your appointment, this time is reserved for you and no one else.

Please cancel your appointment online or by phone at least 48 hours prior to your appointment if you need to cancel. This will allow time for the slot to be filled by another patient. If you do not notify us at least 48 hours in advance, you will forfeit 50% of your visit fee.

For patients and clients who purchase packages or programs, and are unable to utilize their visits, all remaining sessions will be honored for up to one calendar year initial visit.

  • Due to the nature of the services we provide, we do not provide refunds on services rendered, as well as on any medications or lab testing.

For patients and clients who purchase packages or programs, and are unable to utilize their visits, all remaining sessions will be honored for up to one calendar year initial visit.
